You are covered in some way because insurers are legally bound to insure you at the lowest level required in the country you are travelling to, or 3 rd party depending which offers the highest level of cover. However, you may ( car insurance policy ) well have expected your fully comprehensive UK cover to be extended in EU countries and this is not the case. Ian Crowder from the AA has commented that "Roughly a quarter of a million comprehensive policies do not automatically or freely extend comprehensive cover to foreign climates." That's a lot of insurance policies that don't automatically extend your fully comprehensive cover. You can, however, extend your insurance freely in ( life insurance policies ) many cases with a phone call to your insurance policy holder, although others may charge you for the privilege. Either way you still need to make that phone call to get your car fully covered or you may end up footing the bill if your car is stolen or catches alight. It may well be worth considering this when renewing your car insurance policy if you travel abroad often. Fortunately some companies are considerate enough to include ( mortgage quotes ) automatic insurance to EU countries with their policy. The AA, Axa, Budget, Churchill and Marks and Spencer all include cover at no extra charge for periods ranging up to 60 / 90 days. Others, such as Direct Line and Esure are not so generous and automatically extend the cover, but only for 3 days. There is an extra charge after this period. Tesco and More Than will extend your insurance cover but you need to call them to set this up and they will charge you. |
