Insurance companies in the UK are required by law to offer you some level of cover in EU countries, and this is extended to Switzerland, Croatia, Gibraltar, life assurance Norway, Monaco, Iceland, San Marino and Liechtenstein. Countries further east such as Turkey Romania and Bulgaria are not included so call before travelling. However, the legal level of cover is only 3 rd party or the minimum requirement in the country you are travelling to, whichever offers the highest cover. (mortgage deals) An extra charge is incurred for many insurance companies, including Tesco and More Than, whom also require that you call before travelling to activate the insurance. Others are not so harsh with the AA, Axa, Budget, Churchill and Marks and Spencer all ( car insurance quotations ) offering 60 / 90 days free cover with their policies. Direct Line and Esure will give you 3 days cover for free but will charge you thereafter. It may well be worth considering this when renewing your motor insurance if you travel to EU countries in your car often. This isnt the only consideration when travelling in your car abroad as local laws have different requirements for driving a car. Headlights must not dazzle in some countries so you may need to adjust the angle of your bulbs before leaving. Scandinavia, Spain and Italy all demand dipped headlights be used constantly.
